Mid-City is a lively neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. It is a solidly middle-class neighborhood and contains fewer tourist destinations that the majority of neighborhoods within the city. Its location in the middle of the city led to its name. Adjacent neighborhoods include Navarre, Tulane, Gert town, Lakewood and others. The neighborhood has a global feel and over 17% of all residents are foreign-born. It is primarily a residential neighborhood and is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood contains several historic buildings, like the Falstaff Brewery, which have been converted to apartments. It also features shotgun houses and a few larger more luxurious houses. Many consider Mid-City to be the heart of New Orleans and the neighborhood even has its Mardi Gras parading organization, the Krewe of Mid-City which was founded in 1933 and is the 5th oldest such group in the city.
The area was swampy and was not developed until the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Early industries in the area included lumberyards and turpentine works. In 1912, Albert Baldwin developed a screw pump that enabled pumping of water from land that was below sea level. This innovation made the Mid-City area habitable. From 1861-1964 Canal Street in Mid-City and the Central Business District were linked by the streetcar. The streetcar is again in service offering a unique way for residents to travel through the neighborhood. Due to its low land, nature the neighborhood suffered extensive flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Today, the neighborhood is still undergoing rebuilding efforts.
Public education is provided by the New Orleans Public School District and Recovery School District. However, the only school in the neighborhood is Warren Easton Senior High. Canal Street bisects the Mid-City neighborhood, and the streetcar travels this route offering a more unusual option for daily commutes. Attractions in the neighborhood include the Crescent City Farmer’s Market, Besthoff Sculpture Garden, the Parkway Bakery & Tavern and much more. Today the neighborhood features an abundance of beautiful homes and peaceful oak-lined avenues. Victorian shotgun homes and Edwardian townhouses are common.
